Area: Technical AI Governance
I'm particularly interested in supervising research in the 'assessment', 'access', or 'operationalisation' categories of technical AI governance (see taig.stanford.edu). I would still be interested in supervising projects in other categories, though depending on the project, it may be helpful to find a secondary supervisor that has more hands-on experience in that area.
Additionally, I'd be interested in supervising projects exploring meta-level questions about technical AI governance as a field. E.g. How could technical expertise be of most use to policymakers; How can advances in TAIG be made most useful to governance.

I am a DPhil (PhD) student in engineering at the University of Oxford, where I'm affiliated with the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative.
My work centres around technical AI governance -- that is, technical research and development that can enable or inform AI governance and policy.
Previously, I was a research scholar at the Centre for the Governance of AI and a technical advisor at UK AISI. I have master’s degrees in maths and computational science from Durham and Uppsala Universities, respectively. -
The most important attributes are strong writing skills and the capacity to learn quickly. Some amount of technical background is helpful, as is some exposure to ongoing AI governance and policy discussions.
